While the Alandi priests, in their arrogance, claimed to "possess" God by virtue of their Vedic
knowledge (jnana) and rituals, Vithalpant learned that the divine can never be possessed and can be pursued or intimated through a life of giving service.
Still, the story is not entirely black-and-white: while Vithalpant was seriously tempted by
and attracted to sannyasa, there is also the wise guru and "renouncer", Ramananda, who was able to see the legitimacy of different redemptive paths. To this extent, the story is
not one of class war (or caste war).
