Jnanadeva and the Warkari Movement/Prof. Dr. Fred Dallmayr

Note 7

For a reader coming from the west, these lines from Jnaneshvari as well as the Changdeva story are liable to evoke the memory of another biblical passage – Micah's pithy and timeless standard of true religiosity: "to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God."

Micah 6, 8. The Changadeva story is taken from Edwards, Dnyaneshwar: The Out-Cast Brahmin, pp. 39-42, 62. (I have omitted the episode of the burning hut from which the three brothers and their sister are miraculously saved.) The translation of the passage from Jnaneshvari is taken from Bahirat, The philosophy of Jnanadeva, p. 3.
