Indian Philosophy and Religion focus on the elaboration of salvation methods, providing the individual with liberation from the bondage of material
life. The spiritual leader (guru), who achieved by means of his special life-style and personal subjective experience a higher level of reality, plays a dominant role within this system. He is the only one, who is
capable of providing the truth-seeker with the ultimate truth, that leads to his salvation.
Many of these methods and techniques, mainly the practice of Yoga, have been introduced to the western culture. Today they are considered
frequently as useful methods for personal welfare.
S. B. Chandekar concentrates in his article on a particular problem of the Indian salvation techniques. He analyses the question, by means of which
methods the spiritual leader transfers his cognition and experience to his disciple. To Chandekar´s view this question was neglected up to the present time. Chandekar is basing his arguments exclusively on
the old Indian tradition of the Veda, presenting its contents as authoritative truth, that are still valid even today. He underlies his study the cognitions of the sage Sri Mayananda, who dedicated his entire
life to the exploration of this problem, setting down his results in the Sarvanga-Yoga.
In his article S. B. Chandekar presents not only a detailed overview of the essential contents of this important scripture, furthermore he provides us
with a deep insight into the contents of the Veda and Indian thought-tradition, as well as into his personal vision of a "New World".
