Introduction

to Karan Singh, Ph.D.: "Peace - A Multi-Dimensional Quest"

by Katerina Wolf, Ph.D.

Our society is standing at the threshold of a new age. The transition into the 21st century is an event, being accompanied by various speculations, expectations and prophecies. Considering the public opinion, it seems, that this opinion is divided into two streams: On one side, there is the conviction, that mankind is doomed to death, on the other side there is the firm belief into a global, constructive and holistic development.

This dualistic process signifies the state of our world itself. Disintegration, as it became obvious very clearly in the later development in East Europe on one hand, unification processes, as for example in the latest development in central and western Europe on the other hand. The 20th century was an age, being marked by essential political and religious crisis. The fact, that in spite of unification and integration tendencies there still exists an urgent potential for crisis and wars, cannot be denied. The latest nuclear event in India is a very clear sign for this. Therefore, universal peace remains a predominant subject of the next century.

Karan Singh, the author of this article, was many years governor of the political active regions of Kashmir and Jammu. From this position and experience he analyses this problem and tries to develop possible conflict solutions.

Singh presents in his analysis a multi-dimensional model, considering the individual as its fundamental source and realising the family as social basis, focusing at the social interaction between the different social groups as an essential problem of the contemporary social order. The political structure of the states and their universal interaction are finally concluding his study.

Singh considers as primary aim of the coming age the quest for mechanisms, including a peaceful conflict-solution between mankind and environment. He sees a possible solution in the mental tracing back of man. For him, the most important gateway to universal peace lies in the realisation of man's own inner God-Nature, being the same for every individual, transcending barriers of faith, sex and social status. The presentation of Karan Singh is clearly deeply rooted in the philosophical tradition of India, but this is indeed a challenge and chance for the western reader, to open himself for new ways of perception, in order to receive new and progressive ideas and inspirations.
