Lila, Leela

The term Lila (from Sanskrit 'Play') is based on the Hindu conviction, that god created the universe as a playful, joyous and creative act. The transformation of this idea into a philosophical concept was fulfilled mainly by the school of Vishnuism, revolving especially around the cult of Krishna in his manifestation as Gopala (cowherd). The concept of the later Krishnaism was elaborated in almost all aspects of its religious systems (theology, mythology, mystics) according to this doctrine. As theological term Lila is mentioned for the first time in the Vedanta Sutra of Badarayana (2.1.33).
