The conference aimed at opening a dialogue and an exchange of ideas between science, religion and philosophy, following the 'Parliament of Religions', Chicago, 1893.

It was an attempt to start a stocktaking of common or complement knowledge in science, religion and philosophy before the turn of the millennium and to develop approaches to an universal canon of values in the meaning of 'Unity in Diversity', like the Dalai Lama expressed it there.

The conference was held in honour for the great Mahrati poet, philosopher and saint Jnanadeva.
